How do four pickleball courts fit on one tennis court?
A tennis court's lines measure 78x36 ft. With the recommended run-off behind each baseline and beside each sideline, the full court area comes to 120x60 ft, or 7,200 sq ft (ITF court-size diagram). HomeGuide prices a new tennis court at the same 120x60 ft size.
USA Pickleball's minimum total playing surface is 30x60 ft, or 1,800 sq ft (USA Pickleball). Four of those make exactly 7,200 sq ft. Two courts sit side by side across the 60 ft width, and two more sit end to end along the 120 ft length. Each court's long axis runs the same direction as the old tennis court.
The math leaves no slack. USA Pickleball's preferred 34x64 pad would need a 68x128 ft area for four, which a standard tennis court doesn't have. If your fence encloses less than 120x60, or the gates sit in awkward spots, three courts may be the honest answer. We measure inside the fence at the site visit. Our 30x60 vs 34x64 pad sizing guide has the full numbers.
Keep the orientation, too. USA Pickleball warns against striping pickleball at right angles across a north–south tennis court, because it puts players facing low morning and evening sun.
What are the conversion options?
Think of it as a ladder. Each rung costs more and commits the court further to pickleball. Pick by who still plays tennis and the shape of the surface.
| Rung | What we do | Tennis still playable? | Best when |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Blended lines + portable nets | Clean, add pickleball lines in a contrasting color over the tennis layout, supply portable nets | Yes | Both groups share the court; budget is tight |
| 2. Permanent lines + nets | Remove the tennis net, set permanent pickleball posts and nets, paint dedicated lines | No | Pickleball has taken over the court |
| 3. Full resurface + 4' padded dividers | Crack repair, acrylic resurfacer, new color coats, dedicated lines, permanent nets, 4 ft padded divider fences between courts | No | The surface is worn, and you want four clean, separate courts |
Portable net sets run $100–$500 each and permanent nets $300–$1,500 each, per HomeGuide. A divider between courts is, in one retailer's words, a "4-foot fence, with padding" that keeps balls out of the next game (Pickleball Central).
Our court crew handles the surfacing, crack repair, lines and nets on every rung. Divider fences, gate changes and any perimeter fence work are scoped at the site visit and confirmed, line by line, on your written quote.
Why do cracks have to be fixed first?
Because paint doesn't fix cracks. USA Pickleball puts it plainly: "Coatings alone will not fill cracks." New lines on a cracked court look good for a season, then the cracks telegraph back through.
So the rule on every conversion is simple: repair first, then stripe. Here's how we sort it out at the site visit.
- Hairline cracks (1/8 in. or less). A sanded base coat can hide these, per USA Pickleball.
- Wider cracks on a stable slab. These get cleaned and filled with an acrylic crack filler, never asphalt filler, per SportMaster's best practices.
- Cracks that move. If one side sits higher, or a crack reopens every year, the base is moving. Options include fabric-based crack systems, a full overlay, or rebuilding the base. USA Pickleball notes that none of these works every time, so we price them honestly.
- Low spots. We flood the court and look for puddles that sit too long. Birdbaths get patched and leveled before any color goes down.
Tulsa's own park courts show the pattern. One firm's published summary of 2025 work at six City of Tulsa parks describes basketball courts on aging asphalt with cracks spread across the surface. They needed grinding, crack and birdbath repair, then new acrylic. If your old tennis court needs that level of work, our court resurfacing page covers it. If the slab itself is failing, our post-tension vs standard concrete guide explains the rebuild choice.
What has the City of Tulsa done with its own courts?
Improve Our Tulsa II is a $4.8 million sports-court program that aims to upgrade 98% of Tulsa Parks' sports courts. By August 2024, it had added 32 new pickleball courts and resurfaced 33 existing tennis courts. All renovations are scheduled for completion by 2026 (City of Tulsa).
Shared courts work in public use, too. At Holiday Hills Park, four pickleball courts share a concrete complex with one tennis court. In 2025 the courts were power-washed, recoated in acrylic, and restriped for both sports, according to that same contractor's project summary. If a busy city court can run blended lines, an HOA court can.
Will a converted court be louder for the neighbors?
Usually, yes. That's the conversation to have with your board before you stripe. Charles Leahy, presenting at an Acoustical Society of America meeting, put it at about 900 pops an hour from each court. His best fix is distance: at least 600–800 ft from homes. One acoustic consultant measures a paddle hit at 70–100 dB from 100 ft away (W&S). NAR reports a paddle strike can be more than 25 dB louder than the same tennis shot.
Four courts on one tennis pad means four times the pops in the same spot. Suits have been filed in other states. Our noise mitigation guide covers distance, acoustic fence panels and scheduling.
What changes with fence, gates and lights?
An old tennis fence is a good start, but rarely right as-is. USA Pickleball wants gates at both ends, wide enough for wheelchairs and maintenance equipment. If you replace or extend the fence, Tulsa caps fences inside required setbacks at 8 ft under §45.070-A of the zoning code, and anything over 7 ft needs a building permit (City of Tulsa). See our court fencing installation page.
Tennis lights rarely line up with four new courts. A house lot is exempt from Tulsa's outdoor lighting chapter, but HOA, church and club courts are not. New fixtures there need a lighting plan, no more than 0.5 foot-candles at a lot line next to residential zoning, and fixture heights of 16, 20 or 35 ft depending on distance. Our court lighting installation page covers it, and any electrical work is confirmed on your written quote.
What does a tennis-to-pickleball conversion cost?
HomeGuide puts converting one tennis court into four pickleball courts at $5,000–$20,000 nationally. That covers resurfacing, replacing components and new lines. Crack repair, nets, dividers and lighting decide where you land.
| Item | Published range (as of 2026) | Source |
|---|---|---|
| One tennis court converted to four pickleball courts | $5,000–$20,000 | HomeGuide, national |
| Portable net set, each | $100–$500 | HomeGuide |
| Permanent net, each | $300–$1,500 | HomeGuide |
| Lighting, 2 or 4 poles at 20 ft | $5,000–$10,000 | HomeGuide |
| New 120x60 tennis court, for comparison | $40,000–$100,000 | HomeGuide |
Our court construction cost guide compares these with Oklahoma figures and every source. HOA boards weighing a multi-court plan should also see our HOA court builder page.

Frequently asked questions
How many pickleball courts fit on one tennis court?
Four, at USA Pickleball's 30x60 ft minimum, on a standard 120x60 ft tennis court area. At the preferred 34x64 size, four won't fit. Smaller or oddly fenced enclosures may hold three, so we measure inside the fence first.
Can tennis and pickleball share the same court?
Yes. Pickleball lines go down in a color that stands out from the tennis lines, and portable nets come with the job. Tulsa's Holiday Hills Park uses shared striping on a public court. Players learn their own lines fast.
Do I need a permit to convert a tennis court?
New lines and coatings don't change the court's footprint. Permits come into play when fence, retaining walls or lighting change. Tulsa requires a building permit for fences over 7 ft and a lighting plan for lights on HOA, church or club lots.
Can you convert an asphalt tennis court?
Yes, as long as the asphalt holds up. Old asphalt cracks, so we survey it before quoting. If cracking runs across the whole court, we price crack repair against rebuilding the base, side by side.
Do we need padded dividers between the courts?
Not to play, but they help. Without dividers, balls roll into the next game and stop play on two courts. A 4 ft padded divider keeps each court separate. It's part of the top rung on the options ladder.
How long does a conversion take?
Far less time than a new court, since nothing gets poured or cured. Crack repair, coating and lines take days of dry working weather. Acrylic needs air and surface temperatures of 50°F and rising, with no rain on the way.
